Exclusive: "We are well fired up!" 64 teams entered Back of the Net’s first ever Non Slag Cup on the 20th May 2007.

After 64 days, 815 matches, 176 goals and 425,346 pies sold, It all came down to a 90 minute match - St.Etienne Vs FC Porto (aka whitey9scouser Vs DeWalker)

The winner takes all, the loser left with nothing.

Prior to kick-off, Ladbrokes had made FC Porto clear favourites at 2/1 to lift the coveted Non Slag trophy, with St.Etienne at a huge 6/1 to emerge triumphant. However, the controversial St.Etienne manager was not worried by this.

“Ere ya lad, my boys can beat any $*$%£! when we are on form and let me tell you, we are well fired up for tomorrows match!. We have proved ourselves over the course of the tourny by knocking out some of the big guns like Auxerre in the Semi’s and we will deliver the same fate to the cup favourites!” He spat in a strong scouse accent.

DeWalker, manager of the mighty FC Porto was less confident before kick off it seemed. “May the best team, lets just hope its an entertaining match. Mr. Scouser has had the better of me in the past when we have played but we are on a roll at the minute and the wins keep coming so you just never know. At the end of the day Im very proud of my boys to get this far and whether we leave with or without the trophy, we will walk out with our heads held high” he told the assembled press at the pre-match conference.

The match got underway on a baking Sunday afternoon.
A very nervy start for both teams with possession being conceded regularly. Early chances for first FC Porto, then St.Etienne but to no joy for either.
FC Porto began to show their superiority and before long were dominating the game and deservedly took the lead on the 30 minute mark.

FC Porto 1 – 0 St.Etienne.

St.Etienne’s dominance grew with FC Porto never really looking a threat. That was until an optimistic through ball was met by the Porto forward who in turn hit a scruffy shot which the St.Etienne keeper comically padded into his own net.

St.Etienne 1 – 1 FC Porto.

Half Time.

The players emerged from the tunnel for the second half.
Whatever DeWalker said to his players at half time certainly worked, they were looking faster, stronger and more purposeful than they had done all match.
Muscling past the St.Etienne defender, the ball was coolly slotted into the bottom corner in the 55th minute.

St.Etienne 1 – 2 FC Porto

The match looked almost over with FC Porto’s constant attacks going close on every opportunity; the third goal to seal the match looked inevitable. That goal however, never came.

After Porto’s wasted chances and a few frantic changes to both tactics and personnel, St.Etienne put the foot on the gas and went Gung Ho. “All or Nothing la, all or nothing” whitey9scouser could be heard bellowing from the touchline.

Taking advantage of yet another missed opportunity by Porto, St.Etienne broke on the counter with some slick one touch football, within five passes; they found themselves one on one with the keeper. Goal! The scores are level with not long left to play, what a final this is turning out to be!

St.Etienne 2 – 2 FC Porto

With 10 minutes left on the clock and the scores even, both teams looked to be sitting back waiting for the opposition to slip up. Eventually, with only 5 minutes remaining Porto made the first move, something they would live to regret! With only 3 men at the back, St.Etienne stole the ball and in almost an exact replica of their previous goal, they took the lead for the first time in the match!

St.Etienne 3 – 2 FC Porto

Sensing victory, St.Etienne turned up the heat and eventually killed off the match by grabbing their fourth and final goal. The referee looks up to the heavens and gives three sharp blows on his whistle........its all over!

Final score:

St.Etienne 4 – 2 FC Porto

The BOTN reporter caught up a very intoxicated whitey9scouser at the post match party and asked him how he felt about lifting arguably the most coveted trophy on BOTN and being crowned the best non slag player around.

“Hiccup”

Congratulations to whitey9scouser and watch out for the next BOTN Non Slag Cup........coming to a TV near you!
